Consulate of South Korea in Hong Kong
5-6F, Far East Finance Center 16, Harcourt Road, Hong Kong SAR

At the Consulate of Korea, we were fortunate enough to meet Consulate General Yoo Hyungcheul and have a wonderful conversation with Consul Jung Hyoungho.
The South Korean Consulate in Hong Kong was established in 1949, following its independence from Japan at the end of World War 2. 2024 is the 75th anniversary of the Consulate’s establishment in Hong Kong. Although the South Korean embassy at Beijing holds more weight in diplomatic and military issues (given the control of the Chinese government over those spheres), this Consulate continues to cultivate economic and cultural prosperity in Hong Kong.
South Korea sees Hong Kong as a “core piece” of the North East Asian region, viewing it as a window of financial opportunity and strong diplomatic ties. They frequently host cultural events, such as K-Con, a music festival hosting popular South Korean artists, alongside Korea month in October and the welcoming of famous Korean film industry prospects throughout the year.
Trade continues to be an important centerpiece of Hong Kong-Korea relations, with semiconductors being the key commodity imported into Hong Kong. Fruits also serve as a key export out of South Korea, alongside other agricultural products. With Hong Kong being a Top 5 destination for South Korean travel, it is no surprise that over 2 million people have been exchanged between Hong Kong and South Korea since 2018.
Consul Jung Hyoungho elaborated on his own diplomatic journey - he began considering international relations as a high schooler, majored in the field in university, and took the necessary tests to finally be able to represent South Korea. In Korea, he prepared protocols for Covid-19 and even handled bilateral relationships with Russia following the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war. He emphasized that flexibility was the most important trait for young diplomats aiming to get involved in the field, and to truly be passionate about representing one’s country.
We thank the Consulate, Consulate-General Yoo Hyungcheul, and Consul Jung Hyoungho for this wonderful opportunity!
