The Consulate of Cambodia of Hong Kong is situated across the iconic Tsim Sha Tsui ferry pier where we were greeted by Diplomat S.K. We began this conversation about all the ways Cambodia has endeavored to provide, boost, and trade with regions of China.

Hong Kong is not the only region of China where Cambodia has set up a consulate. In fact, they have also set up consulates in Beijing, Chongqing, and Xian to name a few. While the consulates are all connected, they all serve a specific purpose in their mission to foster deeper ties with China through an economic, political, and cultural focus.

HK and Cambodia primarily trade a number of goods such as rubber, fruits, and garments, this is all made possible with the huge investments made by China facilitated by the Belt and Road Initiative. Additionally, the Free-Trade Agreement of 2023 enabled greater provisions, technical cooperation, and capacity building which eased economic efficiency.

But the Consulate doesn’t just exist for economic operations, it serves a great role in uplifting the Cambodian community and diaspora within HK. Whether it’s millions of tourists traveling between the two countries, or exhibitions such as the Belt and Road Expo, the consulate fosters efficient transactions for people to deepen ties between the two countries from a cultural side. We ended our conversation with S.K by asking him about his journey as a diplomat. His early life had always been shaped constantly following world events and learning about foreign places. After studying finance at university, he began his career at his local minister’s office for eleven years before joining the Cambodian mission in Brunei three years ago. He will be situated in Hong Kong for one year in an attempt to attract more investment from Hong Kong into Cambodia. Nevertheless, he is enjoying his stay in HK by becoming more immersed in HK’s vast cultural landscape. S.K parted us with some final words of advice. “If you want, don’t think so much, time will pass you, if you want it, do it.” We would like to thank S.K And we hope to see him soon!
